Computer science major Ruzan Melik-Yolchyan has been nominated by LaGuardia Community College for the 2020 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship in Math, Natural Science & Engineering.
The scholarship for college students pursuing STEM fields is given every year to 400-500 students out of a pool of 1,200 nominees.
Melik-Yolchyan immigrated to the United States four years ago from Armenia. She enrolled at LaGuardia to study comp-sci.
“I chose to pursue computer science because I see how important technology is to our economy and society,” she said. “I want to be part of this fast-growing field.”
Melik-Yolchyan’s honors include making the Dean’s list (she has a 3.6 GPA) and being a member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor’s Society. She is set to graduate from LaGuardia in June, and plans to transfer to a four-year college.
Winners of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship will be announced in late April.
