Gail Mellow to deliver final commencement address

Gail Mellow, the outgoing president of LaGuardia Community College, will deliver the keynote address at the college’s 47th Commencement on June 13 at the Barclays Center.

It will be Mellow’s last commencement, as she announced plans to step down in August 2019. Mellow has served as president since 2000.

LaGuardia CC’s class of 2019 has more than 1,700 students who will receive their associate degree in 60 majors.

The alumni speaker will be Aida Akim-Escriva (LaGuardia ’15), who works in fundraising for Global Fund for Women. Akim-Escriva earned her associate degree in journalism from LaGuardia before getting her bachelor’s degree from Amherst College.

The class of 2019 speaker will be Kishauna Givans, a 30-year-old therapeutic recreation major from Jamaica. She plans to transfer to a four-year college and then pursue a career in health care public policy.
